Writing in 2006

Does it take more to raise awareness than a few like-minded individuals in a crowded room? People conversing over caviar and cold cocktails about the latest fad issue seeking meaning and purpose in a crowded room to justify their mundane lives. Do these people ever get anything done? anything substantial that is.

I spoke to a lot of friends who have expressed interest in writing. What sparks interest in being a writer anyway? Is there a human need, an innate desire to tell your story? Oral traditions are part of a natural instinct to pass on the knowledge and wisdom that you have acquired to get by. Some people want the fame, fortune and celebrity that comes with being on a best seller list. Others want the entourage of self serving love interests.  At least they believe with all the romance novels they will never be that lonely. Many want to live their alter egos on the pages of their prose. Technical designer by day, Harlequin Romance writer by night. Some people want to tell you how they did great things like Bill Clinton’s titles, or simply how to do things better Emeril’s cook books quickly come to mind. But for whatever reason, fact or fiction, people want a say.

Millions of books are printed yearly. It turns out no one really writes any more. Forget about what’s published by the large houses like Random House and Reuters, Scholastic. Look at the millions of bloggers on line. Getting out what they had for dinner, how they got their first job etc. They are on social networks. Writing away profiles. Telling stories through their flicker accounts and picasso pages about who got married and what they did last summer. All without ever setting a pen to paper. Life Scripted. When I get older I will not have to worry about forgetting my youth. I can just relive it by reading my blog. It will be great. Where are we going?

People don’t write anymore. They don’t wait for memoirs to get notices. They don’t walk on a wire between the WTC to gain publicity. They set up a free page on blogger and start ranting on about their lives. No bother sending updated new address cards. Just update you’re my space profile with  your latest email address and your friends and family will never lose touch.

I always thought it would be fun to write. Not because I thought I was particularly good, but only because I thought I had something profound to say. But everyone thinks that what they have to say is slightly profound in some respect anyway.

I started a blog, to tell my story. To stay in touch with friends I never see. Then I got too busy,  I stopped blogging. There go my interest waning. I started focusing on my “Career”. I really can’t commit to any one thing. I usually find myself immersed in one thing for a little while and then quickly moving on to something else. Its easy enough to simply to want to be rich. Its another thing working hard to earn what it takes to become a billionaire. How do you stay true to your self without settling. You can’t will yourself to be thin and beautiful or can you? It seems that some people can. But for every smiling face you see there is a long dark road that lies behind. A road you never had to travel. You were lucky enough to avoid the pitch black journey of thick wooded jungle only getting glimpsing of the sun drenched coast that lies before you now.

So tell me how you do it. What gets you up in the morning. What preempts you to hit snooze just for ten more minutes? Maybe you should write about it. You might have an entourage to travel with you next time to that hum drum fund raiser to raise awareness about the next popular social cause. Maybe then I could blog about it .

Joanne Got Married

She got married. If you missed the ceremony, here are some pics. Feel free to add comments. It was a great party, and I am happy and sad at the same time, to see another great friend pull the trigger. At least she found love and happiness, despite the fact that she had to go to PA to find it.

Soul Searching

I have been doing a lot of purging lately and not a lot of blogging. I had a garage sale and parted somehow with most of the things I never use. My old palm pilot. My old lap top. My old bags, clothes, TVs, VCRS, old computer speakers. I  got new things and I didn't have any use for my old things. I made quite a bit of money over $150 in under two hours of selling. Then I packed everything up and moved on.

It makes me sad to think of all the things I had to get rid of. I rummaged through old clothes I wore in college. An old desk chair. Old Books. Candles. etc etc. I sold it all. I was almost saying good bye to my youth and hello to the next stage in my life.

This was a week before Katrina blew into town. I am purging my life consciously, These people are having their lives purged by disaster and mishap. It makes me think of how fortunate and lucky I am. It also reminds me of how much fate plays such a large part in our lives. We work hard, and play hard, and love. We are constantly, or at least I am, doing, and going, working and loving. We think we are in control and our lives are stable. We are walking through a life we feel we have a lot of control over. Then one day something tragic happens, a pet runs away, a loved one is lost, a job is lost, disaster strikes, someone you know is diagnosed with breast cancer, falls out of love with you. And there you are amidst chaos soul searching.

The History of The Blog - Part 1

So you thought Blogs were the next big thing. It seems like they have been around since as early as 1996. Blockstar has a nice Time Line of Blog History. Looks like Jorn Barger is credited with coining the term blog in 1997. Rebecca Blood also has a nice post about Blog History that dates back to 2000.
Here is Eaton's first blog and here is his blog now.

A Great Quote on the Impact of Blogs

I leave you with this quote by Rebecca Blood 9 years after the spotting of the first blog:

"We are being pummeled by a deluge of data and unless we create time and spaces in which to reflect, we will be left with only our reactions. I strongly believe in the power of weblogs to transform both writers and readers from "audience" to "public" and from "consumer" to "creator." Weblogs are no panacea for the crippling effects of a media-saturated culture, but I believe they are one antidote. - Rebecca Blood -

Roughly five years after she posted it, it still seems quite apropos.
