Video of the Week - Shakira - La Tortura -

What is a good blog without a good music video frankly? Am I selling out? I do know I never have time to look at music videos. Gone are the days when I would be in college lounging on the couch "wanting my MTV". Gone is the MTV for that matter that used to play actual music videos.

There are sites now where you can grab codecs to post popular and not so popular songs to web blogs and even friendster profiles

musicvideocodes.com is one such site.

Its great they have a step by step guide on how to do it so its easy and fun.

Here is a song I have to blast on the radio. Its La Tortura by Shakira, whom I truly admire as an artist.  I am not really sure why I like this song so much, but it is catchy. I don't even understand all the lyrics, but here they are. If anyone has a good translation, please feel free to post a comment about it. Its amazing how music is such a universal language  that you can like a song despite the fact that you have no idea what its about.

LA TORTURA

[Sanz:]
Hay payita mia, guardate la poesia
Guardate la alegria pa' ti

[Shakira:]
No pido que todos los días sean de sol
No pido que todos los viernes sean de fiesta
Tan poco te pido que vuelvas rogando perdón
Si lloras con los ojos secos y hablando de ella

Ay amor me duele tanto

[Sanz:]
Me duele tanto

[Shakira:]
Que te fueras sin decir a dónde
Ay amor fue una tortura...
Perderte

[Sanz:]
Yo sé que no he sido un santo
Pero lo puedo arreglar, amor

[Shakira:]
No sólo de pan vive el hombre
Y no de excusas vivo yo

[Sanz:]

[Sanz:]
Ay amor me duele tanto, me duele tanto
Que no creas más en mis promesas

[Shakira:]
Ay amor

[Sanz:]
Es una tortura

[Shakira:]
Perderte

[Sanz:]
Yo sé que no he sido un santo
Pero lo puedo arreglar, amor

[Shakira:]
No sólo de pan vive el hombre
Y no de excusas vivo yo

[Sanz:]
Sólo de errores se aprende
Y hoy sé que es tuyo mi corazón

[Shakira:]
Mejor te guardas todo eso
A otro perro con ese hueso y nos decimos adios

[Sanz:]
No te bajes, no te bajes
Oye negrita mira, no te rajes
De lunes a viernes tienes mi amor
Dejame el sabado a mi que es mejor
Oye mi negra no me castigues mas
Porque alla afuera sin ti no tengo paz
Yo solo soy un hombre muy arrepentido
Soy como el ave que vuelve a su nido

Yo se que no he sido un santo
Pero lo puedo arreglar amor

[Shakira:]
No solo de pan vive el hombre
Y no de excusas vivo yo.

[Sanz:]
Solo de errores se aprende
Y hoy se que tuyo es mi corazon

[Shakira:]
AAaaay... AAaaay... AAaaay... Ay Ay
Ay todo lo que he hecho por tí
Fue una tortura perderte
Me duele tanto que sea así

Sigue llorando perdon
Yo ya no voy a llorar... por tí

This port inspired me to grab the English Translation:

Shakira - La Tortura (English) Lyrics

            THE TORTURE (English Translation)

I'm not asking that every day be sunny
I'm not asking that there be a party every Friday
Nor do I ask you to come back begging forgiveness
If you're crying with dry eyes,
  Speaking about her

Oh my love, it hurts so much
  It hurts so much
That you left without saying a word
Oh my love, losing you was torture

I know I haven't been a saint
But I can make it up to you

Man doesn't live on bread alone
Nor do I live on excuses

We only learn from mistakes
And today I know my heart is yours

Better save that for yourself
Take that bone to some other dog
  And let's say goodbye

I can't ask winter to spare a rose bush
I can't ask an elm tree to bear pears
I can't ask the eternal of a mere mortal
And go about casting thousands of pearls before swine

Oh my love, it hurts so much
  It hurts so much
That you no longer trust my promises
Oh my love, losing you has been torture

I know I haven't been a saint
And I'm not made of stone

Man doesn't live on bread alone
Nor do I live on excuses

We only learn from our mistakes
And today I know my heart is yours

Better save that for yourself
Take that bone to some other dog
  And let's say goodbye

Listen, baby, don't you go
  Listen, baby, don't get angry
From Monday to Friday you have my love
Give Saturday to me and you'll be better off
Listen baby, don't punish me anymore
Without you, out there I have no peace
  I'm just a repentant man
I'm the bird that returns to its nest

I know I haven't been a saint
And I'm not made of stone

Man doesn't live on bread alone
Nor do I live on excuses

We only learn from our mistakes
And today I know my heart is yours

Better save it for someone foolish enough to believe you and say Goodbye

AD LIBS

Oh after all I've done for you
It was such a torture to lose you
It hurts me so that it's like this
  Keep on crying sorry
  I…
  I'm not going
  To cry over you

Ani in Concert

I threw a few photos together with a gravel soundtrack from a concert I recently attended at the Brookhaven Amphitheatre.  She was great, we had 11th row seats so it made it even better. Here is a compilation of the shots I got set to Gravel. Just a warning, I didn't use flash in most of them out of respect for the artisit and some shots are out of focus so it might look like an acid trip.

My Space Music

I am just learning about this site my space which lets musicians host a site for free, lists tours, and it even hosts up to four songs on the web. Apparently, this is how Nirvana got started. The Black eyed peas have a page here. System of a Down has a page here with songs that leaves you begging for more. NIN has a page. Its a great tool for upcoming artists.

On the Peas....

First, I have to say I love the peas about as much as I love outkast. Second, a funny story. I was speaking with a family friend who retired from working at GE doing R&D for medical devices this past weekend. Needless to say, I was reading an article about My Space in Business week, and how it was a site that got favorites such as the Smashing Pumpkins and The Black Eyed peas started. To which she replied what are those recipes. Too funny.

Google & The Museum Mile Festival

Charlie recently blogged about the Museum Mile Festival. I was sad I missed it, but Goggle it seems did not. The logo on their main search page pays homage to the great Frank Lloyd Wright. You can clearly make out the Guggenheim in the G.

New Aussie Artists - Karen Jaconson

I heard Karen sing for the first time at a bar in Long Island. A few friends were there for a happy hour and she just happened to be singing. She is a very passionate singer and skilled piano player. I really enjoyed her rendition of London Town which you can sample at her site. You can also get a list of upcoming gigs there.  She was very willing to chat about her hometown and career. I love supporting independent artists especially those that are passionately working towards their goals. Its great that you can stumble upon good music anywhere bars, subways, even parks.  I still can't figure out how a girl from Australia goes from Sydney to Fenway Park to a bar in Long Island.

Hey Artist, Got a dollar...Comments on A Subway Artist

                                      Go to fullsize image

Have you ever taken the subway and run into an under ground artist, especially while commuting home from long day at work. Well I had one of those days. After a long day I headed down into the 1 train @ 50th Street as I always do. It was around 7 or so, not too late, but late enough so the trains were less crowded. Sometimes there are subway artists there. But most of the time they are just not good enough to take time out of ones busy schedule to even just stop and listen. Then I heard Dorian Spencer. For some reason fate had brought me here to this point in time as the old cliche goes. I had to stop and pay attention. He had a powerful voice and passionately continued to strum his guitar even as an express train screeched by. Discouraged by people passing him by he was not.

I easily found his site and grabbed a sample of a great song "Pretending its not happening" the same one I heard him singing underground. I will only say that first, its a great song - Dorian sings with a refreshing sense of honesty. He writes about his struggle to find his path in life. He sung about his fears of lost potential, and missed opportunity, and sullenly admitted to making mistakes and still not knowing quite what he wants out of life. (Can anyone else relate to this) But then he offered a promising refrain reflecting on the importance of staying in ones own skin and not compromised our identities and continuing to learn and live and pursue our desires.  Looks like someone beat me to posting about him though. Sometimes music moves you. Its not every day you get to hear live music from a person that "gets it".

Get the Music - Visit the Site - Read his bio

I must admit I am now two for two on bumping into talented musicians when I least expect it.

The Lyrics

Here are the lyrics to my favorite song:

The map has gotten darker and life for me has gotten gray
I have to admit that I'm older
Pretending its not happening

Now I am not saying that I shouldn't change
Or look at life in a different way
Or even think twice about the things I thought were strange

But with all I can do and all I can say, I wouldn't be me if I changed my name,
Now maybe I'm jaded,
maybe I'm Jaded

Hopes and Dreams form yesterday
They show how fast time slips away
The promise I showed when I was young
has all but faded
And now I'm trying
and Struggling
and fighting
to hold on to me
Well I'm learning.
I'm living
And Dying
To hold on to me.

I wanted to be an actor,
Well I guess I wanted fame
Now I don't know what I'm after
Pretending its not happening

Now I am not saying that I shouldn't change
Or look at life in a different way
Or even think twice about the things I thought were strange

But with all I can do and all I can say, I wouldn't be me if I changed my name,
Now maybe I'm jaded,
maybe I'm Jaded

ohhhh Yeahh Yeahhh
ohh Yeahh

So many lessons I forgot to learn
Until it was too late
To many bridges I didn't mean to burn, but I guess I cast my fate

And now I'm trying and Struggling and fighting
to hold on to me
Well I'm learning.
I'm living
And Dying

To hold on to me.
The map has gotten darker and life for me has gotten gray
I have to admit that I'm older
Pretending its not happening

Pretending its not happening

Pretending its not happening

Pretending its not happening

On a side note - Did you know...

"The Dorian mode is named after the Dorian Greeks. In Greek music theory it was based on the Dorian tetra chord: a series of rising intervals of a semitone followed by two whole tones. Applied to a whole octave, the Dorian mode was built upon two Dorian tetra chords separated by a whole tone. This is the same as playing all the white notes of a piano from E to E: E F G A | B C D E. Placing the two tetra chords together, and the single tone at bottom of the scale produces the Hypodorian mode (below Dorian): A | B C D E | (E) F G A. Placing the two tetra chords together, and the single tone at the top of the scale produces the Hyperdorian mode (above Dorian), which is effectively the same as the Mixolydian mode: B C D E | (E) F G A | B. Confusingly, the Dorian mode is the same as the medieval and modern Phrygian mode." (as per Wikepedia)

Lara Ewen @ Otto's

For Tax Day a group of friend's decided to celebrate by heading over to Otto's to see Nikki's friend Lara rock out.

(A picture of the skyline over the LIE on our way downtown)

Her music is very soulful and her voice is amazing. She writes her own music and lyrics. The music was great as was the 20oz margarita on the rocks. As for Otto's, well you can take a visit and see for yourself.

Click Here to get a sample of her sound.

  • The best shot t I got of Lara (It was just too dark for my flash)

Interesting Story...

When I first walked in this guy with long hair was sitting next to the bar. He was wearing shorts and a tank top and looked like he just stepped off a plane coming in from LA.  I put in my order for a Cap'n Apple Jack upon which he decides to give a girl power shout out. Now until then I hadn't even noticed him. And then I realize, "Hey, this is a guy, what is with the girl power". I thought this was a sure sign that 1) I was not staying here long and 2) I quite possible could have not made the right decision on my drink. It didn't even matter though because they didn't have all the ingredients to make it. I ordered about three drinks from the menu until I finally landed on something they actually had the ingredients to prepare, a margarita on the rocks. I think I was the only person in the bar not drinking a beer.
